Random Sites

Without Word Spy we’d never know the meaning of new “words” like adorkable or carcooning. I can’t believe I haven’t found this site before (it has been around since 2001!). I guess I’m just 404.

Says-It.com explains a lot of the really “surprising” things encountered on the net. I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen the same church sign on several websites – each with different “amazing” sayings – each one purporting to be real – probably created here.

Getting Men to Church

There’s been lots of discussion about getting men to church. Maybe this is the answer? Nah.

This will help.

Links on a Lazy Day

I’ve been storing up some more interesting links for a lazy afternoon. After a several days of early mornings and late nights, it is time for that lazy afternoon.

Laugh. I’ve started to enjoy this site from the wacky folks behind Shoebox cards. I think I like their newsdroppings better than the mainstream press. I can’t vouch for the “safety” of all the links, but girls might enjoy this one.

Helpful. Theological Word of the Day might be helpful in learning or reviewing some of the deep theological concepts in bite-size chunks. Maybe I’ll be able to remember the difference between Infralapsarianism and Supralapsarianism.

Dim-witted. I bet the bank would have accepted it if was millions instead.

Lists. Stuff Christians Like. Prodigal Jon “wants to be honest and upfront and hopefully a little funny about the issues the church and Christians struggle with sometimes. I want to say, “Whoa, whoa, please don’t judge me or God by Christian radio.” I want to admit the times we’ve dropped the ball on issues or ideas that people called to love their neighbor should have knocked out of the park. I want to blow up misconceptions and preconceptions about what it means to be a Christian.” Through today he’s up to #231. Drinking Coffee in Church. I found #198 to be scientific. #35 explains much of my gray hair. I’ll bet that you’ve heard God’s favorite word noted in #98.

Really Random Links – Seriously Non-Profound

A couple of random things that I’ve been saving for a “blogger’sblock” day:

Maybe I won’t have fries with that: a new kind of art

Strange British humor … I think.

In case you were wondering … this is a bit scary.

An activity for the next time you or the kids are bored.

Be a cover girl … or boy

And finally, something that might even be useful:

A helpful tool for converting web pages to pdf files.

Men … Colds … Dial 999

Thabiti also pointed to this insightful video on men and sickness. I’m sure he was drawn to it out of his concern that for his fellow-man in this season of rampant sickness. I wonder … is there sickness in the Grand Cayman?

Random Amusing Things

These things might be really fun … absolutely worthless, but fun.

The newest toy recall from China.

This is pretty creative.

Fifteen ways to tie your sneakers!

For those who have no friends, this might be an answer.

Creative guys with too much time on their hands?

Warning … Satire

It has been an unusual week for me … both at church and at home. Not a bad week, just unusual. But there has been little time to consider posting. But I’ve had a few links I’ve been considering but a bit hesitant to post since they are based on satire – and there are some people that truly don’t get it – which means there may be a few offended folks in my vast readership. But I have to do something to distract from the Seahawks choking. Maybe the best thing about satire is that it can’t help but make you think. The unfortunate thing is that some think these sites are “true.”

Lark News has been around for quite a while. The lead article for November is an interesting concept … and an apt illustration of satire. Just about everyone would agree that it is God that brings results, but amazingly there are churches that are pretty close to considering “pay-for-performance” – really.

Glen Schaumloeffel sent me the link to TBNN (Team Tominthebox News Network). Before you dismiss this as being a bit “too over-the-top” you might want to take a trip to your local christian retail outlet; or just listen to couple of emergent postmodernists chat for a while. I liked the post about Krakozhia. I hope no one tries this church growth plan! Remember, we’re talking satire here, though they do some serious posts as well.

Finally, there’s The Church You Know a seriously satirical video site with a couple of kickers. I may not appreciate everything here, but it sure makes you think, even when they go a bit beyond where we may feel comfortable (e.g., this post?). And some are pretty pointed, like this one on pastors.

Douglas Wilson has a lot to say about godly satire. Doug does a lot with the genre, but this post is seriously helpful.

Eclectic “Information”

I’ve been a bit slammed with work these past days but I’ve been storing up some eclectic posts that will interest a few, alienate a few, convince a few that I truly am a Philistine, …

  • Thanks to Gary for pointing me to The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks. And if you like that one you will “literally” like this one as well.
  • Tafiti looks to be a demonstration or experimental search engine that demonstrates the “coolness” of Microsoft Searchlight (which you might have to download), a potential challenger to Flash.
  • Sermon Jams are an interesting use of the web’s resources. Might have some impact in communicating to a younger generation.  Not something for a Sunday Worship Service, though I wouldn’t be surprised ….
  • I used to be a youth pastor which may explain why I found some things on this site humorous. You’ll have to decide for yourself if the sarcasm is on point.

Stuff I’ve Been Collecting That Probably Won’t Change Your Life

It has been one of those seasons where writing blog posts has been a bit tough. Motivation, ideas, and time has been a bit hard to come by so it is a good day to share some links I’ve been collecting for these days:

  • There might be a lesson for preachers and teachers somewhere in this video. If not there is at least a good chuckle.
  • Thanks to the guys at eMinistry for pointing us to this helpful presentation that should improve the use of PowerPoint in ministry presentations.
  • Crosswire is an interesting project creating free, open source Bible study software for diverse platforms.
  • What would you do with this high speed internet access? I know I’m just a bit jealous…
  • You could create some really awful publications with these free fonts. Go ahead, add to your collection. You know you want to.
  • Weird facts and unusual uses for products you probably use. This site could be addicting for trivia addicts.
  • Signs that you are not in Kansas anymore.
  • How Gullible are We?

OK, that’s enough. I’m considering serious and spiritual posts for the next few days. Anything you want to read about?
